I did my first Whole30 back in January and while it was an awesome experience, I do know how overwhelming the grocery shopping can feel when you are just starting out. The label checking and second guessing can feel endless. One of the things I felt I really needed was a list of Whole30 compliant items from some of my favorite stores. I put together this Whole30 Sprouts shopping guide because Sprouts is a store I shop in often and there are so many awesome Whole30 compliant items available!
You can also check out my Whole30 Costco shopping guide for more compliant shopping!
Produce
Being a Farmer's Market store, Sprouts is home to a ton of fresh produce items. Obviously all the fresh veggies and fruit are compliant for your Whole30 (minus corn) so feel free to go nuts in this section! Or just stand next to it and take pictures because all the pretty colors 🙂
Besides the typical produce items there are a few convenience items worth mentioning. Pre-cut veggies are a little pricier than chopping them up yourself but sometimes convenience wins!
I love using broccoli slaw to make things like egg roll in a bowl or to add to chicken salad. Sweet potato spirals are great to add to breakfasts as a side to eggs and chicken sausage.
Zucchini spirals are good to pair with marinara and chicken as a replacement for pasta. Pre-riced cauliflower comes in handy for so many recipes! I use mine to make taco casseroles, breakfast fried rice or Greek meal prep bowls.
Refrigerated Items
Meats, Cold Cuts & Eggs
Sprouts has several options for organic and grass fed meats, including ground beef, turkey and chicken.
Apparently back in the day (like a few years ago) it was near impossible to find sugar-free bacon. Fast forward to 2018 and there are three compliant options at one store alone. I've tried all three options here and while all are delicious, I am partial to the one from Pederson's Farms. The perfect addition to breakfasts or meals like this chicken bacon ranch skillet!
It's also usually tough to find kielbasa or breakfast sausages (pictured below) without sugar. Once again these are some great Whole30 compliant options for your meals. I especially love using kielbasa in my sausage and sprouts sheet pan meal. The breakfast sausages from Pederson's have become a quick and easy staple for breakfast meal prep.
For lunch meat, the deli turkey from True Story is the best choice because it only contains turkey breast, water and salt. Super clean! These ones from Apple Gate contain rosemary extract and potato starch in addition to chicken/turkey breast and salt but they are still technically complaint. The thick cut chicken breast is a great topping for a salad or just a quick protein snack after a workout.
There are several options for cage-free, pasture raised and/or organic eggs at Sprouts including their own brand as well as 2 of my favorite brands: Vital Farms and Chino Valley Ranchers. Vital Farms also carries pre-made hardboiled eggs which are awesome to have on hand for quick on the go snacks or with a little avocado as a preworkout.
Almond Milks & Creamer
Several of the Sprouts brand almond milks contain sugar which makes them out for Whole30 but they do carry several other brands that are compliant.
One of the biggest fears I hear about undergoing a Whole30 is giving up coffee creamer. It was absolutely something I was worried about as well but knowing there are compliant ways to brighten up my black coffee helps! I often use either Nutpods or Califia Unsweetened Better Half Creamer. Sometimes just a little coconut cream (more on that later) is enough for my coffee.
Speaking of coffee...
I know this isn't refrigerated but it goes with coffee so I'm sticking it here 🙂
These are some other options to add to your morning cuppa. I've talked often about my love of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. Collagen has helped my hair, nails, skin and most of all joints. When I was undergoing Accutane treatment, collagen peptides helped keep my skin scar-free. I put a scoop in my coffee every morning.
In addition to the regular peptides, Vital proteins also has collagen creamers that are awesome and Sprouts carried both the Vanilla and the Coconut flavors. And Sprouts usually has some sales and I have often seen them for 25% off.
And if you're into bulletproof coffee, Sprouts carries both MCT Oil and Brain Octane. I have used Brain Octane to add a little healthy fats and creaminess into my coffee.
Salsas & Guacamole
There are tons of options for compliant guacamole as well as salsa and pico de gallo to spice up your meals. Tacupeto is one of my fave salsas, Whole30 or not! The chipotle, mild and hot salsas from Sprouts are also compliant. A few others from the Sprouts brand have sugar so make sure to check your labels! Salsa and guac are perfect to add to burrito bowls or spicy breakfast frittatas.
These are condiments really but since they are fermented, you will catch the in the refrigerator section. A lot of sriracha sauces contain sugar but Wildbrine is compliant. And if you're into sauerkraut, that's compliant too.
Pantry Items
Dressing, Marinades and Cooking Sauces
There are some great sugar-free options for dressings at Sprouts. Primal Kitchen Foods has several options for dressings and marinades. Just steer clear of the honey mustard since honey is obviously out for Whole30 (but definitely give it a try after your round, it's delicious!)
Sir Kensington's carries regular ranch, pizza ranch and buffalo ranch and all three are compliant. Time to make a salad!
Coconut aminos are great for making Asian inspired dishes like cauliflower fried rice and it's a great substitute for soy sauce.
Sprouts also carries The New Primal and they have several options for all your marinating needs. I love making quick spicy shredded chicken in the instant pot with their sauces!
Yai's Thai and Thai Kitchen make Whole30 compliant curry sauces and pastes that are available at Sprouts.
The majority of the Sprouts brand marinara sauces contain sugar but I was able to find both pizza sauce and one other Italian Herb pasta sauce that were compliant. There are also a few other brands they carry that are compliant.
Oils & Healthy Fats
Sprouts has an array of oils including olive, coconut and avocado along with the sprays that make roasting veggies super easy. I often use avocado oil spray for air frying potatoes.
Ghee is a Whole30 staple for me. There are several brands and types to choose from. From the plain Sprouts brand, to the different flavors that Fourth and Heart makes. I really like their Pink Salt and Vanilla flavors. There are also individual packs of ghee that can be used for coffee or for travel.
There is also an array of nut butters that are Whole30 compliant at Sprouts. Some, like Justin's contain Palm Oil which is fine for Whole30 but if you are more of a purist, you can look for brands that contain only almonds/cashews and salt like Artisana. The Sprouts brand of almond butter is also compliant.
Canned Goods
These are some good options for diced tomatoes and tomato sauce that do not contain sugar and are Whole30 compliant. I use this often for shakshuka.
Besides using coconut milk or coconut cream in my coffee on occasion, I also love using it in soups like Zuppa Toscana. The Sprouts brand and Thai Kitchen are both compliant.
I love snacking on olives so these made it to my list. Sprouts also carries both Wild Planet and Safe Catch which are sustainably caught and higher quality when it comes to canned tuna. Sprouts has their own brand of tuna and tuna snack packs that are also compliant.
Sprouts brand of canned chicken is also compliant. The ingredients are just chicken, water and salt - perfect!
Condiments
I basically have hot sauce on me at all times. I put it on everything! I'm partial to the O'Brother's brand but all these are compliant.
When I did my first round of Whole30, I had a mustard from Trader Joe's and right before I was about to use it, I decided to glance at the label and saw there was sugar in it. I had no idea! To keep you safe, here are some condiments that are all sugar-free and Whole30 compliant.
Bone broth is so nutrient dense and it's so good to sip on with a little sea salt and some avocado. The Sprouts brand of chicken bone broth is compliant but the beef broth is not because of the addition of Caramel color which translates to sugar. But you can find compliant beef broth with Kettle and Fire or Bonafide Provisions (in the freezer section).
Spices and Seasonings
Sprouts carries tons of options when it comes to compliant spices and seasonings. Definitely more than pictured here but if I snapped a shot of all the compliant seasonings there we would be here all day! P.S.- I keep a little tiny Redmond's sea salt in my purse. Not necessarily because I needed to but because it's so darn cute haha!
Flours
Regular flour is out for Whole30 but almond flour and coconut flour are great substitutes. Arrowroot is a great pantry staple to use as a thickener for soups and sauces. I use it to make my buffalo chicken casserole and my buffalo sauce for Whole30 baked wings.
Snacks
Epic bars, DNX bars and Nick's Sticks are all Whole30 options for quick on the go snacks! I like to keep a few of these in my car for emergencies.
RxBar's are carried at Sprouts and there are tons of compliant options to choose from. Just make sure to check your labels carefully since they are not all compliant. For Whole30, steer clear of anything containing peanut butter!
Drinks
Sparkling water and kombucha (on occasion) are my Whole30 drinks of choice. Just make sure to check your labels on the Kombucha since anything containing added sugar is out but GT's carries several flavors that are compliant. My favorite little mocktail on Whole30 is half sparkling water and half kombucha. It's a delicious and refreshing drink!
Frozen Section
There are lots of frozen fruits and veggies that are Whole30 compliant. In addition to the usual, there are some frozen pre-cut items that are pretty convenient.
Among them, are cubed butternut squash and pre-sliced sweet potatoes. Now the sweet potatoes were a bit pricey but if you're not into slicing your own sweet potatoes then by all means, grab yourself a bag. I love the Sprouts brand of frozen hash browns because the only ingredient is organic potatoes. Perfect!
Well that's all for now guys! I will work on keeping this list updated as new things come out and especially with Sprouts specific brand of compliant items. For more Whole30 shopping guides check out this post! Hopefully this Whole30 Sprouts shopping guide will help you out on your round!
